SAMM encourages all men to attend the “Men Meeting the Challenge” Conference on Saturday 4th September at the King’s School (Futter Hall), Pennant Hills Rd, North Parramatta.

Keynote speakers are Peter Adam “Living by Faith” & Ivan Lee “Man’s Mission vs God’s Mission”.  More details are in the brochure, available from church.

The Gospels and Eyewitness Testimony 

The Gospels present themselves in the form of personal eyewitness testimony (Luke 1:1-4, John 21:24). But does this personal involvement mean historical method is compromised?

On the contrary, in fact this personal involvement affords us a close look at the events in Jesus’ life, which is advantageous to understand the significance of Jesus life, death and resurrection. The Gospels were written within the lifetime of eyewitnesses, who acted as guarantors of the story of Jesus in the earliest communities.

A sceptic may dismiss the Gospels on the grounds that the supernatural is impossible. Yet a critical view may readily accept the form of personal testimony and consider them trustworthy based on solid historical evidence.

For the Christian this is an encouragement that our faith in Jesus is grounded in historical events which requires a solid commitment to his Lordship. For the enquirer this may create puzzlement, disbelief or indifference but the claims of Jesus remain.

1 Peter 5:1-14 - Standing Firm

The Apostle Peter writes to the Christians scattered throughout Asia-Minor, the result of persecution during the Roman Empire.

His message to them - stand firm in the faith.

‘Clothe themselves with humility towards one another’ while you wait for Jesus to return.

The elders of the church are to set the example in this, not ‘lording it over’ people but serving them. Jesus Christ the ‘Chief Shepherd’ is the ultimate e.g. of one serving. We owe our whole life to him.

Peter says ‘cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you’ and be ready for the attacks of Satan. Keep your eyes on Jesus.

God promises that in a little while he will restore you and make you strong. ‘To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.’
